Blizzard published its WoW Forever class deep dive for Mage and Shaman on October 7, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PDT (22:00 UTC).

This guide lists every Mage change in that article and adds the Mage items from the beta development notes of September 24 and October 1 as change history.

We read the English article on October 9, 2026; the German and Korean pages of the same article returned a server error that day, so all three language versions of this guide follow the English original.

We have not tested these changes in the beta ourselves; this page summarizes what Blizzard has published.

Blizzard says the Mage update is about choosing the right spell for the moment: Frost layers control, Fire builds toward heavy critical strikes, and Arcane amplifies the rest of the toolkit.

The headline addition is Frostfire Bolt at level 40, a spell that counts as both Fire and Frost and gives Fire-and-Frost hybrid builds one spell that uses both sets of talents.

Arcane Blast and Ice Lance become 11-point gold-medal talents, and Cold Snap moves to 21 points with a 10-minute cooldown.

Talents open at level 10 and keep the one-point milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, now joined by a new 16-point milestone.

You change talents, including Legacy talents, at a class trainer in a major city, and Dual Specialization becomes available at level 40.

Blizzard describes the Mage as one of the most powerful and resourceful damage-dealing classes, with Polymorph as one of the best crowd control abilities.

Its stated weakness is that Mages are extremely fragile and die easily if caught in melee combat.

Blizzard notes that class abilities and talents may continue to evolve throughout the beta and are subject to additional changes.

What changes in Forever

Blizzard lists six baseline changes that every Mage gets, whatever talents you pick.

Comprehension is a new Mage-only minor tradeskill that lets you read and decipher scrolls dropped by creatures in the world.

Blizzard says the scrolls give various benefits for players to discover, and the article does not list them.

You attempt Comprehension with the Comprehend Scroll ability, found in the General tab of the spellbook.

Cone of Cold's duration is decreased; the article gives no new value.

Blizzard calls this part of a general fix against gold farmers and experience boosters who kite large numbers of creatures with repetitive, low-risk mechanics.

Frostfire Bolt is a new spell learned at level 40, with a 3-second cast.

It deals large upfront damage like Fireball and applies a debuff with damage over time and a movement speed Slow.

It counts as both a Fire spell and a Frost spell, so most talents that benefit either school also benefit Frostfire Bolt.

It always uses the higher of your Fire or Frost spell damage bonus and the lower of the target's Fire or Frost resistance.

Mage Armor's mana regeneration bonus from Spirit is increased, and Magic Attunement, formerly an Arcane talent, is now baseline.

Magic AttunementFormer Arcane talent, now baseline

Baseline Mage changes in the October 7 deep dive.

Blizzard's stated intent is that builds with both Fire and Frost talents get a spell that benefits from both, opening many new Mage talent builds.

Its example: take Ignite (Fire) and Ice Shards (Frost), and a Frostfire Bolt critical strike deals 200% damage, then another 40% of that as Ignite damage, for 280% in total.

Our arithmetic: 40% of 200% is 80%, and 200% plus 80% is 280%; the percentages themselves are Blizzard's.

Change history: the September 24 beta notes made Arcane Missiles check line of sight only once at the start of the channel instead of for each missile.

The same notes extended Wake of Fire's buff to 30 seconds (was 20 seconds) and the Hot Streak buff to 20 seconds (was 15 seconds).

They also stopped Ignite from double dipping on % damage increase modifiers, and wands no longer gain damage from the user's spell damage.

The October 1 notes renamed Hot Streak to Heating Up, because it no longer depends on a streak, and returned Combustion to 3 charges (was 4).

They also removed the second resist roll from Improved Scorch's Fire Vulnerability and the resist roll from applying Winter's Chill, since the original spell already had to hit.

All Mage scrolls from Comprehension got another balance pass in that build and can no longer be cast while moving.

Mage items in the beta development notes before the deep dive.

The October 7 deep dive fits these notes: it already uses the name Heating Up and does not repeat the buff durations or Combustion's charges, so the values in the notes remain the latest published ones.

Known issues listed for the October 1 build: Mages who learn Research can be prevented from accessing it, and the Scroll of Liminal Passage does not function correctly.

In the October 1 build the beta level cap was 30, below the level 40 needed for Frostfire Bolt; Blizzard had published no newer development notes when we checked on October 9.

Talents

Blizzard groups the talent changes by tree, and the tables below list every Mage talent the deep dive mentions.

Gold-medal talents are the one-point milestone talents; the deep dive names five Mage gold medals at 11, 16 and 21 points.

Arcane gets Arcane Blast at 11 points and Missile Barrage at 16 points.

Frost gets Ice Lance at 11 points, Ice Block at 16 points and Cold Snap at 21 points.

The article does not name the Fire gold medals or any Mage 31-point talent.

PointsArcaneFireFrost
11Arcane Blast—Ice Lance
16Missile Barrage—Ice Block
21——Cold Snap

Mage gold-medal talents named in the deep dive (— = not named).

Arcane: Arcane Blast is a new spell with a 2.5-second cast that deals damage, then increases the damage of all other Mage spells and its own Mana cost.

Those increases stack up to 4 times and last 8 seconds or until any other spell is cast.

Blizzard says older versions of Arcane Blast encouraged casting only that spell, while this one encourages using the rest of the toolkit after building a stack.

Missile Barrage gives Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt a chance to make your next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast and cost no Mana; the chance is doubled for Arcane Blast.

Arcane Concentration now triggers less often from spells of a significantly lower rank, because gold farmers used cheap low-rank spells to fish for its procs.

Blizzard says it applied the same kind of reduction to multiple talents across many classes, and any similar talent that triggers a free effect should be expected to carry the same low-rank penalty.

Arcane Mind now increases Intellect instead of maximum Mana, also raises the critical strike damage bonus of Arcane spells and no longer requires Arcane Resilience.

Arcane Resilience moves up from row 3 to row 2, is no longer a gold medal and needs only 2 points for the same effect.

With only 1 point, Improved Counterspell now always gives a shorter Silence instead of a 50% chance of any Silence, and Magic Absorption gets a 1-second cooldown on its effect.

TalentChange
Arcane Blast (new, 11-point gold medal)2.5-second cast; buffs your other spellsstacks up to 4 times, 8 seconds
Missile Barrage (new, 16-point gold medal)Faster, free Arcane Missiles; double chance from Arcane Blast
Arcane ConcentrationLower proc chance from low-rank spells
Arcane MindIntellect instead of maximum Mana; Arcane critical damage; no Arcane Resilience prerequisite
Arcane ResilienceRow 3 → row 2; no longer a gold medal; 2 points
Arcane Geometry (new, row 3)Longer range for Arcane spells
Arcane Impact (formerly Improved Arcane Explosion)Critical strike chance for all Arcane spells
Improved Channeling (formerly Improved Arcane Missiles)Also protects Arcane Blast from pushback when hit
Arcane Shielding (formerly Improved Mana Shield)Cheaper Mana Shield; more resistance from Mage Armor

Arcane SubtletyRow 1 → row 2; resistance ignoring a little stronger, threat reduction a little weaker
Arcane MeditationMore Spirit regeneration while casting; requires Arcane Concentration
Improved Counterspell1 point: shorter Silence every time (was a 50% chance)
Magic Absorption1-second cooldown on its effect
Wand Specialization2 points for the same benefit
Arcane InstabilityNo longer requires Presence of Mind
Arcane PowerNow requires Presence of Mind
Magic AttunementNow baseline

Arcane talent changes.

Fire: Ignite now gives each Mage their own debuff instead of one Ignite shared by every Mage in the encounter, which Blizzard says fixes threat and damage attribution problems.

Blizzard also made sure Ignite damage is not lost when critical strikes land too close together, as it did in Season of Discovery.

Heating Up is a new row 4 talent that requires Pyroblast: non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch reduce your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, stacking up to 3 times.

With 3 stacks Pyroblast casts in 1.5 seconds, and Blizzard calls the talent Forever's variation on Hot Streak from early expansions.

Our arithmetic: 3 stacks of 25% are a 75% reduction, so 1.5 seconds implies a 6-second base cast; the article itself does not state the base cast time.

Wake of Fire (formerly Improved Fire Blast) moves up from row 2 to row 1, cuts Fire Blast's cooldown further, and each non-trivial kill gives your next Fire Blast a large critical strike bonus.

Incineration (formerly Incinerate) moves up from row 3 to row 1 and now also raises the critical strike chance of Ice Lance and Arcane Blast.

Improved Scorch's debuff now benefits only the Mage who cast it, Blast Wave no longer requires Pyroblast, and Burning Soul needs 3 talent points for the same effect.

Impact is Blizzard's second named example of the low-rank penalty: low-rank spells now have a lower chance to trigger it.

TalentChange
Heating Up (new, row 4)Next Pyroblast 25% faster per stack, up to 31.5 seconds with 3 stacks; requires Pyroblast
IgniteOne debuff per Mage; no damage lost to closely timed crits
Wake of Fire (formerly Improved Fire Blast)Row 2 → row 1; shorter Fire Blast cooldown; crit bonus after a kill
Incineration (formerly Incinerate)Row 3 → row 1; also Ice Lance and Arcane Blast crit chance
Improved FireballAlso shortens Frostfire Bolt's cast
Improved ScorchDebuff benefits only the casting Mage
ImpactLower proc chance from low-rank spells
Burning Soul3 points for the same effect
Blast WaveNo longer requires Pyroblast

Fire talent changes. Removed Fire talents: none.

Frost: Ice Lance is an instant spell with low damage that deals 300% more damage to Frozen targets, or to targets treated as Frozen by Fingers of Frost.

Fingers of Frost is a new row 5 talent: your Chill effects get a chance to grant 1 or 2 charges that make your spells treat the target as if it were Frozen.

The article links Fingers of Frost and Ice Lance by a prerequisite; its exact wording is 'Pre-requisite of Ice Lance'.

Cold Snap moves down from row 3 to row 5, becomes the 21-point gold medal, and its cooldown rises to 10 minutes from 5 minutes.

Ice Block moves up from row 5 to row 4 and becomes the 16-point gold medal.

Improved Blizzard's Slow now maxes out at 40% instead of 65%, to cut the AoE (area of effect) instance farming that gold farmers and boosters used.

Permafrost now extends Chill effects by 11/22/33% instead of 1/2/3 seconds, so it no longer stretches Improved Blizzard's Slow excessively.

Winter's Chill now benefits only the Mage who cast it, and its critical strike bonus applies only to Frostbolt and Ice Lance.

Elemental Precision now raises hit chance with Fire and Frost spells instead of lowering the target's chance to resist, Frost Channeling moves up from row 4 to row 3, and Shatter no longer requires Improved Frost Nova.

ShatterNo longer requires Improved Frost Nova

Frost talent changes. Removed Frost talents: none.

Why Fire and Frost hybrid builds now make sense: several changes in the article reach across schools.

Frostfire Bolt counts as Fire and Frost, Improved Fireball now also shortens its cast time, and its critical strikes build Heating Up.

Missile Barrage triggers from Frostfire Bolt and Frostbolt, Incineration boosts Ice Lance and Arcane Blast, and Elemental Precision raises hit chance with both Fire and Frost spells.

Arcane Blast's stack raises the damage of all other Mage spells, which is why Blizzard describes Arcane as power that amplifies the rest of the toolkit.

We do not rank builds: Blizzard published no point totals for these builds, and the only build it spells out is the Ignite and Ice Shards example.

No Mage talents were removed: the Fire and Frost sections both say 'Removed talents: None', and the Arcane section only lists Magic Attunement as moved to baseline.

Leveling

Blizzard gives no leveling route for the Mage, so this section only puts the published level and point thresholds in order.

Talents open at level 10.

The first gold medals sit at 11 points: Arcane Blast for Arcane and Ice Lance for Frost.

The new 16-point milestone holds Missile Barrage (Arcane) and Ice Block (Frost), and Cold Snap is the 21-point Frost gold medal.

Frostfire Bolt and Dual Specialization both arrive at level 40.

The October 1 beta build capped levels at 30, so testers could not reach level 40 in that build.

Wake of Fire's longer 30-second buff targets leveling: the September 24 notes say the old duration was hard to use because the Mage restores mana between fights.

Low-rank spells now matter while leveling: the October 1 notes say a Rank 1 Frostbolt cast at level 60 has a 0% chance to activate Frostbite.

Blizzard frames this as a choice between applying a Slow quickly and cheaply, or casting a spell that can still activate Frostbite.

The shorter Cone of Cold and Improved Blizzard's 40% Slow cap target mass kiting and AoE farming; Blizzard does not say how much they change normal leveling.

Mage thresholds in order

  1. Level 10Talents open
  2. 11 pointsArcane Blast or Ice Lance
  3. 16 pointsMissile Barrage or Ice Block
  4. 21 pointsCold Snap (Frost)
  5. Level 40Frostfire Bolt, Dual Specialization

Stat priority

Blizzard published no stat priority for Forever Mages, so we do not rank stats.

The table lists only what the deep dive and the beta notes tie to each stat.

Intellect: Arcane Mind now increases Intellect instead of maximum Mana.

Spirit: Mage Armor gives more mana regeneration from Spirit, and Arcane Meditation increases Spirit regeneration while casting.

Hit chance: Arcane Focus now raises hit chance with Arcane spells, and Elemental Precision with Fire and Frost spells.

Spell damage: Frostfire Bolt uses whichever of your Fire or Frost spell damage bonuses is higher.

Critical strike: Arcane Impact, Incineration, Ignite and Heating Up all work through critical strikes.

Low-rank spells: the October 1 notes say spells cast at ranks vastly below your level get less benefit from spell damage and a lower chance to activate class abilities and talents.

Fire or Frost spell damageFrostfire Bolt uses the higher bonus

What the official sources tie to each Mage stat (no ranking published).

For how spell power scales in Forever, see our spell power guide.

Gear

The deep dive has no gear advice for Mages.

One published rule matters for wands: since the September 24 notes, wands no longer gain damage from your spell damage.

Wand Specialization now needs only 2 talent points for the same benefit.

Frostfire Bolt reads the higher of your Fire or Frost spell damage bonus, so Fire-only or Frost-only spell damage still counts for it through whichever school is higher.

Our reading: school-specific gear stays useful to hybrid builds, but Blizzard has published no item lists or stat weights.

Arcane Shielding now also increases the resistances granted by Mage Armor.

Recommended professions

Blizzard gives no profession recommendation for Mages.

The Mage-specific addition is Comprehension, a minor tradeskill only Mages have, used through Comprehend Scroll on scrolls dropped by creatures.

The October 1 notes rebalanced all Mage scrolls from Comprehension and made them impossible to cast while moving.

For the regular professions and the camping changes, see our professions guide.

Addons and macros

Blizzard recommends no addons or macros for Mages.

The built-in Cooldown Manager has been testable for Mages since the September 24 notes; it is off by default and is enabled in Options under the Gameplay Enhancement settings.

The known issues listed with those notes said Arcane Blast could not be tracked and the mana gem needed one extra spell cast before its cooldown was tracked.

Blizzard also said the Cooldown Manager does not yet support spell ranks.

Our reading: because the Arcane Blast stack lasts 8 seconds or until another spell is cast, a tracker for that stack will be useful once tracking works.
